***** BEST QUALITY IMAGES ON THE 5-DVD SET "The Ultimate Roy Rogers Collection: King of the Cowboys"

Heart of the Golden West is one of the noisiest Roy Rogers western comedies produced by Republic Studios. Walter Catlett and Paul Harvey's characters shout hysterically throughout the whole film, causing even Ruth Terry and Roy to raise their voices to be heard. Gabby Hayes and Smiley Burnette together get into enough mischief to delight any small boy and make adults smile. The Sons of the Pioneers are there but, aside from backing Roy in the songs, have very little to do but gallop back and forth furiously on some quest or another. However, the film features two of Bob Nolan's songs - "River Robin" and "Who's Gonna Help Me Sing". The former is used under the opening and closing credits by the studio orchestra. "Who's Gonna Help Me Sing", arranged by Hall Johnson and performed by his Choir with the Sons of the Pioneers and Roy Rogers, is a beautiful choral piece. No one, hearing it without knowing who wrote it, would ever suspect that it came from the pen of Bob Nolan with his reputation as being only a western songwriter.
