Don’t Expect Me Home in the Morning

(Bob Nolan)

There was a time when I’d weep and cry

Everything worried me

I looked at myself to find out why

But there was nothing wrong with me.

So, I’m…

Refrain:

Puttin’ on a great big new sombrero

Goin’ on a rootin’, tootin’ tear, oh,

Don’t expect me home in the morning.

I’m puttin’ on a pair of boots that shine, oh,

Gonna have a high falutin’ time, oh,

Don’t expect me home in the morning.

So hurry up, Dan, my sweetheart’s waitin’

Get along, Dan, there’s time a-wastin’

Hurry up, get along today

And, say, I’m puttin’ on a shirt with a nice clean collar,

Gonna throw a whing ding, whoop and holler.

Don’t expect me home in the morning.

Sometimes I think I will settle down,

Find me a blue eyed gal

And live like a king in a high-toned town

But then again that ain’t so swell.

So, I’m…

Refrain:

Puttin’ on a brand new bright bandana,

Goin’ into town to see Suzanna,

Don’t expect me home in the morning.

Tryin’ to comb my hair but I can’t quite do it

Tryin’ to get the mirror but I can’t get to it,

Don’t expect me home in the morning.

So, hurry up, Dan, my sweetheart's waitin’,

Get along, Dan, there’s time a-wastin’,

Hurry up, get along today,

And say, I wonder if the gal in the bright blue bonnet

Would like a new hat with a bouquet on it.

Don’t expect me home in the morning.

To our great surprise, this lively little song was never recorded by the Sons of the Pioneers - or anyone else. So we sent the sheet music to our friend, Dave Bourne, and he quickly made a demo for us. "Don't Expect Me Home in the Morning" is as typical of rodeo cowboys as is Bob's "Hold That Critter Down", but somehow it was never picked up. It was registered for copyright on March 30, 1940 and was published in "Bob Nolan's Folio of Original Cowboy Classics No. 2" by AMERICAN MUSIC, INC at the same time.
